Regional Planning Progress Update

In the 2024 Burlington to Nanticoke IRRP a recommendation was made to address the remaining electricity needs in Hamilton. To keep pace with the rapid growth and economic development in the Hamilton area, the IESO has launched a new streamlined Hamilton Area Addendum Study. This Addendum Study, encompassing the City of Hamilton, has commenced on February 5, 2026.

It builds on the December 2024 Burlington to Nanticoke Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) which outlines electricity system needs in the region over a 25-year horizon (2024 to 2050). The recommendations from the IRRP were to build a new transmission-connected battery storage facility at Norfolk TS, constructing new 230kV lines and stations from Nanticoke to Norfolk and from Brant to the Middleport-Detweiler corridor, adding new stations at Dundas TS, and monitoring load growth at Caledonia and Brantford for potential non-wire solutions.
