The Burlington to Nanticoke planning region covers the municipalities of Burlington, Hamilton, Oakville, Brantford, Brant County, Haldimand County, and Norfolk County. Regional electricity planning in the Burlington to Nanticoke region is divided into four sub-regions: Brant, Bronte, Hamilton and Caledonia-Norfolk.
The local distribution companies providing services to customers in the area include:
Burlington Hydro Inc.
Hydro One Networks Inc.
Oakville Hydro Electricity Distribution Inc.
The IESO engages with local and regional communities to seek input to help inform planning activities. There are currently no active regional planning engagement activities for this region. See Key Resources below for the latest planning documents.
The third cycle of regional electricity planning is currently underway , with the completion of a Scoping Assessment Outcome Report in December 2022. Based on emerging electricity needs identified in this current cycle, a comprehensive planning approach will be undertaken to develop an Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) for each of the Brant, Hamilton and Caledonia-Norfolk sub-regions. The Scoping Assessment identified no further regional planning is required for the Bronte sub-region at this time.
The Scoping Assessment Outcome Report for the previous cycle of regional planning in the Burlington to Nanticoke region was finalized and posted in September 2017, which recommended the development of an IRRP for the Hamilton sub-region. The final IRRP for the Hamilton sub-region was posted in February 2019, which recommended various end-of-life replacements, conservation, load transfers, and monitoring to manage future needs.
The first cycle of regional planning culminated in the completion of an IRRP for the Brant sub-region in 2015 that resulted in the launch of a demand response pilot to provide interim capacity relief. An IRRP was also completed in 2016 for the Bronte sub-region that resulted in the investigation of conservation and demand management, distributed generation and transmission solutions. An IRRP had not previously been conducted in the Caledonia-Norfolk sub-region.
