Regional Electricity Planning - Burlington to Nanticoke

Forecasting and Planning

The Hamilton area addendum study has kicked-off. In the 2024 Burlington to Nanticoke Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) a recommendation was made to address the remaining electricity needs in Hamilton. To keep pace with the rapid growth and economic development in the Hamilton area, the IESO has launched a new streamlined Hamilton Area Addendum Study which encompasses the City of Hamilton. This engagement initiative will provide interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the elements of an addendum study anticipated to be completed in early 2027.

An addendum study expands on Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) with a 20-year outlook and focuses on a specific area within a region. The planning process provides an opportunity for communities to tell the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities and to contribute to the development of the options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs.

All interested parties are invited to participate in this engagement initiative and may include but are not limited to:

  • The City of Hamilton.
  • The local distribution companies (LDCs).
  • Indigenous communities that may be potentially impacted or may have an interest based on treaty territory, traditional territory or traditional land uses include Huron-Wendat Nation, Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, Six Nations of the Grand River as represented by Six Nations Elected Council as well as the, Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council, the Métis communities invited to participate in engagement activities are: Métis Nation of Ontario, Métis Nation of Ontario Clear Waters Métis Council, and Métis Nation of Ontario Grand River Métis Council.
  • Hydro transmission.
  • Consumers and service providers for the area.

Hamilton Area Technical Working Group - The Technical Working Group is led by the IESO and consists of the LDCs in the region and the local transmitter. The group will use regional planning engagement initiatives to incorporate input while developing the IRRPs for the region.
