The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is launching a Request for Information (RFI) focused on long lead time resources, in particular long duration energy storage (LDES) and hydroelectric generation.
This initiative is an important step in exploring how LDES and hydroelectric resources can contribute to a more reliable and efficient electricity system in Ontario. The RFI aims to gather insights on potential LDES and hydroelectric technologies and projects, the experiences of developers in implementing projects based on these technologies, and the challenges they anticipate facing in a potential IESO procurement for long lead time resources.
This RFI follows a letter issued by the Minister of Energy on July 10, 2023, asking the IESO to consider resources with long lead times and lifespans in its upcoming procurement plans. By engaging with industry stakeholders, the IESO seeks to better understand how these technologies can be integrated into Ontario’s energy landscape.
Your input through this RFI will play a key role in helping the IESO shape strategies that ensure a resilient, adaptable, and forward-looking electricity system for the province.
Anticipated timing for this engagement is presented below.
