Engagements

We are committed to engaging with purpose with external audiences to foster trust and build understanding as the energy transition continues. The IESO’s External Relations Engagement Framework is designed to support opportunities for listening, sharing information and meaningful engagement to balance the needs of diverse communities and other external parties and collectively shape our energy future.

External Relations Engagement Framework

Input from the many voices and various perspectives across the electricity sector is essential to the IESO’s decision-making process. The IESO continuously strives to develop new and meaningful relationships while strengthening existing ones through purposeful, transparent outreach.

Under the External Relations Engagement Framework, the IESO is charting a collective path forward for stakeholders, municipalities and Indigenous communities to plan for the energy transition while remaining reliable, affordable and sustainable.

Engagement Principles

Operating Ontario’s electricity system – from transmission planning to demand forecasting to day-to-day operations – affects the economic and social well-being of every person in the province. It requires purposeful and meaningful engagement.

The External Relations Engagement and Indigenous Engagement Frameworks are built on a series of key principles that align with the IESO’s core values, as well as the interests of the electricity sector, Indigenous communities and the broader economy. These principles ensure that diverse and unique perspectives are considered in decision-making processes.

The IESO applies these principles to every engagement, ensuring that we honour our commitment to partners:

  • Purposeful – Initiate meaningful conversations that move the sector forward
  • Inclusive – Invite many voices and diverse perspectives to the table
  • Timely – Seek input and insight when it can have the most impact
  • Accessible – Ensure we meet people where they are on their energy journey
  • Traceable – Allow everyone to follow the path that is being taken
  • Transparent – Show how engagement helped shape the final outcome

Goals of the External Relations Engagement Framework

The External Relations Engagement Framework is aimed at creating the foundation for strong and enduring relationships to help drive and guide the sector by:

  • Enabling a more replicable, scalable and iterative approach to our engagements;
  • Outlining how we will inform, involve and collaborate with stakeholders to arrive at meaningful outcomes;
  • Offering stakeholders a clearer view of what to expect from the IESO and where they fit in the bigger picture;
  • Supporting an understanding of linkages between initiatives and stakeholder needs or interests;
  • Providing greater certainty on the timing of engagement meetings allowing for enhanced preparedness and participation from stakeholders; and
  • Supporting a foundation for more comprehensive and integrated updates for the Strategic Advisory Committee and IESO Board of Directors.
