Resource Eligibility

Ontario has entered a period of electricity supply need, driven by economic and population growth, retirements and refurbishments of power plants and increased electrification of the transportation and industrial sectors. New electricity generation is needed beginning in 2030 to keep pace with Ontario’s growing economy and to advance beneficial electrification. This new supply will help meet overall energy needs and support demand growth from large step loads in key economic sectors, such as mining, manufacturing and technology.

The IESO is now moving forward with its next long-term procurement, to be held over multiple windows, and which comprises capacity and energy streams and is open to all eligible resource types. These resources, some of which are expected to add to Ontario’s growing battery energy storage fleet, will increase reliability while potentially helping to reduce output from natural gas generators and support the reduction of emissions from the grid.

The reports below represent snapshots of the IESO’s past forecasted needs and offer a reference for our progress toward meeting Ontario’s long-term electricity needs. For more information, please visit the web page for our latest, most current procurement, Long-Term 2 RFP.
