Natural Resources Canada Provides up to $16.7 million to the IESO's Enabling Resources Program

March 7, 2024

Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) announced yesterday that it is providing up to $16.7 million to the IESO’s Enabling Resources Program (ERP). This funding will help the IESO expand its work to tap into new and emerging technologies to help meet Ontario’s energy needs reliably and cost-effectively, while advancing grid decarbonization.

Storage, hybrid facilities and distributed energy resources are positioned to play an important role in Ontario’s future electricity supply mix. The ERP is opening up participation models for these resources in Ontario’s electricity markets, increasing competition, driving down costs and contributing to the decarbonization of the grid.

The funding being provided by NRCan will help enhance this work, including providing the control room with real-time data on the state of charge of battery storage systems, enabling aggregators to consolidate resources across multiple municipalities and the inclusion of supply as small as 100 kW in Ontario’s electricity markets.

The full news release is available in the IESO’s website. More information can be found on the Enabling Resources Program’s web page.
