Preparing for the next polar vortex: Managing the grid under extreme weather conditions

February 6, 2020

Did you know that considerable generation lost during cold-weather events is attributable to a lack of winterization plans from asset operators? Addressing this risk and its potential impact on grid operations, while taking a step towards creating a more resilient system, is the rationale behind the IESO’s release of a Winterization Guideline.

The guideline, which recognizes that effective mitigation of these impacts requires the combined efforts of system operators and owners, outlines extreme cold weather protection measures and procedures based on industry best practices. For more information on developing a cold weather readiness program, and some of the resources created by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation, read the full document.
