Rural and Remote Electricity Rate Protection charge increase for 2017

February 9, 2017

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has determined that the Rural or Remote Rate Protection (RRRP) charge has increased to 0.21 cents per kilowatt-hour, from the 2016 amount of 0.13 cents per kilowatt-hour, effective January 1, 2017.

The RRRP program is designed to reduce costs for eligible customers located in rural or remote areas, where the costs of distributing electricity to these customers are higher. The RRRP revenue allows rural and remote electricity distributors to reduce the amount they would otherwise have to charge eligible customers for distribution service.

As required by Ontario Regulation 442/01, the RRRP program cost is recovered from all electricity customers in the province through a charge that is reviewed annually and approved by the OEB. These charges will appear on the tariffs of rates and charges of all licensed Ontario electricity distributors and are reflected in the Regulatory Charge on customers’ bills.

You can find more information in the Decision and Order, issued by the OEB.
