Regional Electricity Planning - Ottawa Area Sub-Region

Forecasting and Planning

The regional planning cycle for the Ottawa Area sub-region was completed in February 2020 and an Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) was released. Subsequent to the release of this IRRP, the Technical Working Group will undertake an IRRP Addendum Study, which will integrate with the IESO’s ongoing Bulk Transmission Planning Study. The Addendum Study will include an evaluation of the potential benefit of non-wires options to manage future demand growth in central Ottawa. The study will be completed by mid- to late 2020.  Refer to the ‘Schedule of Activities’ for related updates.

Community Engagement

The IESO engages with local and regional communities to seek input to help inform planning activities. This engagement initiative provides interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the development of the IRRP.

Interested parties include but are not limited to:

  • Municipalities including the City of Ottawa which includes the Greenbelt, Kanata, Nepean and Orleans areas
  • Indigenous Communities including the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan and nine other communities, which are represented for the purposes of consultation and engagement by the Algonquins of Ontario Consultation Office
  • Local distribution companies who serve the community including Hydro Ottawa and Hydro One
  • Transmitters
  • Consumers and services providers for the area

All interested parties are invited to participate in this engagement initiative.

Ottawa Area Working Group - A Technical Working Group consisting of the local distribution companies in the region, the local transmitter and the IESO will use this regional planning engagement initiative to consider input that will identify and meet local electricity needs. The Working Group consists of representatives from the LDC in the area – Hydro Ottawa, as well as the transmitter Hydro One Networks Inc., and the IESO.

Additional details on the IESO’s approach to engage communities and interested parties throughout the process can be found in the Engagement Plan. The finalized plan follows a comment period in which a draft was posted for public feedback.
