The coordination of gas and electricity resources is taking on a greater importance in the reliable operation of Ontario's electricity system. The IESO continues to work with both natural gas generators and pipelines to enhance communication and coordination to ensure system reliability.
The need to share information between the natural gas generators in Ontario with natural gas pipeline companies is consistent with activities initiated in other jurisdictions. On June 14, 2014, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) issued an order (FERC Order 787) authorizing the communication of operational information between Natural Gas Pipelines and Electric Transmission Operators including independent system operators (ISOs) in the USA. This authorization includes, among other things, the sharing of gas generator schedules with gas pipeline and storage providers.
The IESO has received input from many natural gas representatives in Ontario that support this coordination effort and invites the broader stakeholder community to learn more about these efforts and the benefits they will provide for Ontario.
This engagement initiative is open to all interested stakeholders and will be of particular interest to natural gas generators and natural gas pipeline companies with operations in Ontario.
