2023 | Completed Project | Demonstration Project Atura Power - Halton Hills Hydrogen BlendingThis project explored the performance of an existing large natural gas turbine when operated with blended natural gas and hydrogen (up to 15% hydrogen) and assessed the impacts on operations, equipment functionality, turbine responsiveness, and market participation, while continuing to provide wholesale grid services such as energy and operating reserve. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Capital Power - Hydrogen Blending – Goreway Power Station, East Windsor Cogeneration Centre and York Energy CentreThis study assessed the financial and technical viability of blending and co-firing hydrogen and natural gas at three of Capital Power’s natural gas generation facilities (East Windsor, Goreway, and York Energy Center) using various hydrogen blending levels (5% to 15%). It provided insights into the effort and costs required at each plant to enable hydrogen blending and informed potential future hydrogen projects at these facilities. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Capital Power - Kingsbridge Green Hydrogen and Storage AssessmentThis study investigated the economic and technical feasibility of producing green hydrogen via electrolysis powered by wind energy and storing it in underground storage units located in depleted gas reservoirs. It explored the use of hydrogen for fueling a hydrogen-methane turbine, natural gas blending, and transportation fuel applications, and evaluated the potential to provide grid reliability services. |

2023 | Completed Project | Demonstration Project Enbridge Gas Inc. - Performance of Combined Heat and Power System Using Blended Hydrogen and Natural Gas as FuelThis project demonstrated the fueling of a 115 kW combined heat and power (CHP) unit with a range of hydrogen and natural gas blends (up to 100% hydrogen) using hydrogen supplied from an existing on-site electrolyzer. It generated electricity and provided heat to the facility while evaluating the use of hydrogen as a fuel source for combined heat and power applications. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Kinectrics - Feasibility Study for an Urban Hydrogen Hub for Grid Flexibility, Resilience, and Carbon Reduction Scalable to Nuclear Power Plant Co-locationThis study assessed the potential for producing hydrogen through solid oxide electrolysis powered by a surrogate heat source to emulate a nuclear power plant. It evaluated the economic feasibility of hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and electricity generation, including installation, maintenance, and operating costs. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Transition Accelerator - The Role of Hydrogen Hubs in Strengthening the Affordability and Reliability of Ontario’s Electricity SystemThis study modeled the potential for hydrogen hubs in the Hamilton region to support the decarbonization of Ontario’s economy and assessed the resulting impacts on the electricity system. It evaluated the ability to cluster hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and demand to facilitate cost-effective net-zero solutions across multiple sectors and improve understanding of the impacts on the electric system. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study University of Windsor - Hydrogen Integrated Greenhouse Horticultural EnergyThis study economically modeled the production, storage, delivery, and consumption of hydrogen for use in Ontario’s agricultural greenhouse sector. It identified the potential grid services that a wind-powered hydrogen production facility could provide in Southwestern Ontario and estimated the range of costs associated with hydrogen integration into a greenhouse operation. 2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Volta Energy Inc. - Feasibility Evaluation of Sustainable, Green and Rapid-Response Metal-Supported Solid Oxide Cell TechnologyThis study assessed how reversible solid oxide hydrogen fuel cells could provide a pathway for hydrogen integration into the electricity grid. It investigated market-entry barriers for reversible solid oxide hydrogen fuel cells and evaluated the responsiveness of the technology to control room signals. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study Western University - NET-PBH2: Negative Emissions Technology for Pale Blue Hydrogen ProductionThis study demonstrated the production of green hydrogen using a PV-powered AEM electrolyzer and blue hydrogen from biogas through the integration of methane and CO₂ membrane separation. It demonstrated the conversion of methane and recycled methane into hydrogen and carbon black using a plasma reactor and evaluated CO₂ capture through the operation of a 20,000 L photobioreactor for algae cultivation and water recycling. |

2023 | Completed Project | Research/Feasibility Study York University - Preliminary Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Productions On-Site and Utilization of Hydrogen in Existing Prime MoversThis study assessed the techno-economic challenges and opportunities associated with the widespread adoption of green hydrogen plants in Ontario. It investigated the feasibility of retrofitting existing gas turbines to operate on hydrogen-natural gas blends in small- and medium-sized generators and evaluated the potential for on-site hydrogen production during off-peak periods to provide faster operating reserve while reducing electricity demand and emissions during periods when large gas plants would otherwise be operating. |
