Regional Electricity Planning - Burlington to Nanticoke

Forecasting and Planning

Regional planning for the Burlington to Nanticoke electrical region was completed in November 2024. This engagement initiative provided communities and stakeholders with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the development of the 2024 Burlington to Nanticoke Integrated Regional Resource Plan. A Regional Infrastructure Plan (RIP) led by Hydro One will be initiated next, as part of the regional planning process. The ongoing Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge and Guelph electricity plan will determine the end point of the new lines and stations from Brant/Powerline station to Middleport-Detweiler circuits. Lastly, the Hamilton addendum will kick-off in 2025 with updates being shared on this webpage.

Regional planning looks at the unique needs of each region, and considers a range of options to meet the area’s needs over a 20-year period. Based on emerging electricity needs identified in this current cycle, a comprehensive planning approach to develop an Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP) is underway that will examine  the Brant, Hamilton and Caledonia-Norfolk sub-regions.

We welcome your input on all aspects of this process, including anticipated community needs and priorities, and potential options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs. All interested parties are invited to participate in upcoming engagement initiatives, including but not limited to:

  • Local municipalities encompassed in the region: City of Burlington, City of Hamilton, Town of Oakville, City of Brantford, Brant County, Haldimand County, and Norfolk County
  • Indigenous communities including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Six Nations of the Grand River and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council and Métis Nation of Ontario (MNO).
  • Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community and already participate as part of the Technical Working Group, including Alectra Utilities Corporation, Burlington Hydro Inc., GrandBridge Energy Inc. (Formerly Energy+ and Brantford Power), Oakville Hydro Inc. and Hydro One Networks Inc. (Distribution)
  • Transmitters (Hydro One Networks Inc.)
  • Consumers, service providers, and associations for the area

Technical Working Group - The Technical Working Group is lead by the IESO, and consists of the LDCs in the region and the local transmitter. The group will use regional planning engagement initiatives to incorporate input while developing the IRRPs for the region.
