Northeast Bulk Planning Initiatives

A new electricity plan for Northeast Ontario was completed in October 2022 to address significant growth particularly in the City of Sault Ste. Marie and City of Timmins areas driven by strong economic development in mining and other industry, decarbonization initiatives and government policies such as Ontario’s Critical Minerals Strategy.

This engagement initiative provided interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration in the development of a bulk system plan for Northeast Ontario.

Electricity planning is underway for Northeast Ontario. This engagement initiative will provide interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration in the development of a bulk system plan for Northeast Ontario anticipated to be complete in Q3 2022.

Bulk electricity plans take up to a 20-year outlook and the planning process provides an opportunity for communities, stakeholders and interested parties to tell the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities, and to contribute to the development of the options for meeting this area’s future electricity needs.

All interested parties are invited to participate in this engagement initiative and may include but are not limited to:

• Local municipalities encompassed in Northeast Ontario including those within the districts of: Algoma, Cochrane, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Sudbury and Timiskaming
• Indigenous communities including Atikameksheng Anishnawbek, Attawapiskat First Nation, Aundeck-Omni-Kaning, Batchewana First Nation, Brunswick House First Nation, Chapleau Cree First Nation, Chapleau Ojibwe First Nation, Constance Lake First Nation, Dokis First Nation, Flying Post First Nation, Fort Albany First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Henvey Inlet First Nation, Kashechewan First Nation, M’Chigeeng First Nation, Matachewan First Nation, Mattagami First Nation, Michipicoten First Nation, Missanabie Cree, Mississauga No. 8 First Nation, Moose Cree First Nation, Nipissing First Nation, Sagamok Anishnawbek, Serpent River First Nation, Sheguindah First Nation, Sheshegwaning First Nation, Taykwa Tagamou First Nation, Temagami First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, Wahgoshig First Nation, Wahnapitae First Nation, Whitefish River First Nation, Wikwemikong Unceded Territory and Zhiibaahaasing First Nation
• Métis Nation of Ontario communities including MNO Chapleau Métis Council, MNO Greenstone Métis Council, MNO Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council, MNO Mattawa Métis Council, MNO North Bay Métis Council, MNO North Channel Métis Council (Blind River), MNO Northern Lights Métis Council (Cochrane), MNO Sudbury Métis Council, MNO Superior North Shore Métis Council (Terrace Bay), MNO Temiskaming Métis Council and MNO Timmins Métis Council
• Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community including Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc., Hearst Power Distribution Company Limited, North Bay Hydro Distribution Ltd., Hydro One Networks Inc., Northern Ontario Wires Inc., Algoma Power Inc., Sault Ste. Marie PUC, and Chapleau PUC.
• Transmitters (Hydro One Networks Inc., Hydro One Sault Ste. Marie LP., PUC Transmission and Five Nations Energy Inc.)
• Major consumers, service providers, and associations for the area
