Resource Acquisition
The Medium-Term Request for Proposals (RFP) is an initiative by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) aimed at securing existing energy resources with expiring contracts to ensure the continued reliability and cost-effectiveness of Ontario’s electricity system.
By conducting Medium-Term RFPs every two to three years, the IESO can respond to changing system needs, maintain a stable energy supply, and encourage competition and innovation in the market.
To date, the IESO has completed two Medium-Term RFPs, MT1 and MT2, with the third procurement, MT3, soon to begin.

Building on the success of MT1 and MT2, the third Medium-Term RFP (MT3) is focused on re-committing existing resources with contracts expiring in or before 2032. These resources are strategically positioned to address the energy and capacity needs that will emerge later this decade and into the early 2030s.
The MT3 RFP will include proposals evaluated solely on price, ensuring a cost-effective approach to meeting Ontario’s future energy requirements.
The Schedule of Activities, upcoming engagement sessions, presentation materials, feedback forms, etc. would then sit directly under the MT3 section so stakeholders can quickly find the information associated with the active procurement.

The second Medium-Term RFP (MT2) was held in 2024 and consisted of two separate streams: the Energy Stream (MT2(e)) and the Capacity Stream (MT2(c)). Through MT2, the IESO executed contracts with 27 Selected Proponents, totalling 3,001.11 MW of Maximum Contract Capacity.

The first Medium-Term RFP (MT1) was held in 2021 and resulted in the IESO entering into contracts for more than 700 MW of capacity from one wind facility and four natural gas facilities.
