Regional Electricity Planning - North & East of Sudbury

Forecasting and Planning

Regional electricity planning in the North & East of Sudbury region was completed in April 2023 with the release of an electricity plan – Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP). A Regional Infrastructure Plan (RIP) led by Hydro One will be initiated next, as part of the regional planning process. This engagement initiative provided interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the elements of the regional planning process.

Regional electricity plans take a 20-year outlook on every region in the province. The planning process provides an opportunity for communities to tell the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities and to contribute to the development of the options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs.

All interested parties are invited to participate in this engagement initiative and may include but are not limited to:

  • Local municipalities encompassed in the region: Town of Moosonee, Town of Hearst, Municipality of East Ferris, Town of Kirkland Lake, Town of Kapuskasing, Town of Cochrane, Town of Iroquois Falls, City of Timmins, City of Temiskaming Shores, Town of Latchford, City of Greater Sudbury, Township of Matachewan, Township of Moonbeam, Municipality of West Nipissing, and City of North Bay
  • Indigenous communities including Constance Lake First Nation, Flying Post First Nation, Matachewan First Nation, Mattagami First Nation, Missanabie Cree, Moose Cree First Nation, Nipissing First Nation, Taykwa Tagamou First Nation, Temagami First Nation, Wahgoshig First Nation and Wahnapitae First Nation
  • Métis Nation of Ontario communities including the Northern Lights Métis Council, Timmins Métis Council, Temiskaming Métis Council and Chapleau Métis Council
  • Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community including Greater Sudbury Hydro Inc., Hearst Power Distribution Company Limited, North Bay Hydro Distribution Ltd., Hydro One Networks Inc. and Northern Ontario Wires Inc.
  • Transmitters (Hydro One)
  • Consumers, service providers and associations for the area

North & East of Sudbury Technical Working Group - A Technical Working Group led by the IESO and consisting of representatives from the five LDCs in the region and the transmitter, will use this regional planning engagement initiative to consider input that will identify and plan for local electricity needs over the next 20 years.

Additional details on the IESO’s plans to engage communities and interested parties throughout the process are outlined in the engagement plan.

All comments and enquiries in this engagement initiative can be directed to engagement@ieso.ca.
