IESO Securing Additional Short-Term Capacity
October 1, 2026
In response to facility maintenance recently requested to start this upcoming winter period through 2027 and 2028, the IESO is taking steps to secure additional short-term capacity to allow for required infrastructure maintenance and ensure system reliability.
Revised 2026/2027 Capacity Auction Targets
The IESO will increase the target for this year’s capacity auction from 1,800 MW to 2,000 MW for summer 2027, and from 1,200 MW to 1,400 MW for winter 2027/2028. The pre-qualification period for the auction has been re-opened and extended to Friday, October 9, 2026, to allow Capacity Auction Participants (CAPs) to modify their capacity qualification submissions in accordance with the increased target. The revised pre-auction report and timelines for the qualification period are available here.
Additional Firm Capacity
The IESO has secured a 6-month commitment for an additional 600 MW of capacity for this upcoming winter period beginning November 1, 2026. This capacity has been acquired as a firm import from Alpha Generation, a past Capacity Auction participant. Any further acquisitions will continue to be disclosed.
