IESO Imposes Sanctions on TransAlta Cogeneration LP

June 25, 2026

On June 1, 2026, the IESO entered into a settlement agreement with TransAlta Cogeneration LP (“TRANSALTA”) in relation to its failure to comply with NERC reliability standards that required it to submit timely verification data concerning the Real Power capability and the Reactive Power capability of one registered generation facility owned by TRANSALTA. The failures gave rise to two breaches of the Market Rules. The non-compliant conduct occurred between June 20, 2023, and December 5, 2023. The settlement was reached through the Expedited Resolution Program administered by the IESO’s Market Assessment and Compliance Division. The IESO has issued an order finding TRANSALTA in breach of the market rules. As part of the sanctions imposed for the breaches, TRANSALTA is subject to a $9,000 financial penalty (plus applicable taxes). More details can be found on the IESO website here.
