Supply-Side Technical Papers Delve into Planning Considerations for Future System
August 28, 2025
A newly released series of technical papers from the IESO investigate supply-side planning questions and leverage insights into different aspects of Ontario’s future electricity system. This series comprises two papers that look at multiple supply-side scenarios involving a mix of resources to determine how to optimize their value on the system. While one paper evaluates the capacity value of energy storage to enhance reliability under different quantity/duration scenarios, the other paper looks at the reliability and economics of variable generation and battery storage resource portfolios to meet electricity needs.
These papers shine a light on the highly dynamic process of determining the appropriate resource mixes that reliably supply Ontario’s electricity demand at cost-effective levels. They will help the IESO and wider sector better understand the trends, risks and considerations when planning for a growing system.
The IESO’s technical papers reflect the changing environment in which we work and plan for, and they complement our Annual Planning Outlook by providing context for forecasts and procurements.
