One Month of Operating the Renewed Market - Observations
June 5, 2025
The renewed market successfully launched in early May, and the transition has gone smoothly. The IESO has been working with market participants to support them acclimating to the renewed market. On June 4, a webinar was held to provide an update and share initial insights. Early indications show that the renewed market is increasing market efficiency, transparency and competition.
Early observations show that:
- Wholesale prices are behaving as expected, varying throughout the province in response to system needs and capabilities.
- Most energy is purchased in the Day-Ahead Market, delivering more operational certainty for the grid.
- The Day-Ahead Market is providing a strong indication of the final “Ontario Price”
The IESO will continue to monitor and validate outcomes to ensure the renewed market is working as intended. This will be especially important as we enter the summer months and Ontario’s peak demand climbs.
More information and insights, as well as a recording of the webinar, are available on the Renewed Market Operations engagement page.
