Black History Month

February 1, 2024

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Black Canadians, and an opportunity to learn more about Black history, culture and experience in Canada.

The Honourable Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to the House of Commons, and the woman who spearheaded the campaign to establish Black History Month in Canada, famously said, “Black history is not just for Black people. Black history is Canadian history.”

Black History Month is an opportunity to learn more about the Black experience in Canada – including the racism and other systemic barriers Black Canadians continue to face – and to reinforce the importance of building a lasting culture of diversity and inclusion, both at the IESO and the sector at large.

Learn more about Black History Month by visiting the Government of Canada’s website.
