IESO Proposes New Clean Electricity Supply to Help Meet Ontario’s Energy Needs and Zero-Emissions Targets

December 14, 2023

To keep pace with Ontario’s growing population and economy, and to advance grid decarbonization, the IESO is targeting 2,000 MW of new non-emitting generation through the Long Term 2 procurement (including wind, solar, hydro and bioenergy). Subsequent procurements will target an additional 3,000 MW. The IESO is also looking at options to re-acquire, upgrade, or expand existing facilities.

This new supply could come online as early as 2030, complementing Ontario’s growing energy storage fleet while representing another step on Ontario’s decarbonization journey.

The procurements targets will be finalized early next year following external engagements with communities and stakeholders, with the first call for proposals to launch later in 2024.

More information is available on the IESO’s website.
