IESO Smart Metering Charge Reduced

The IESO Smart Metering Charge has been reduced from $0.57 per meter per month to $0.43 per meter per month for residential and general service less than 50kW customers.
In its Decision and Order, the Ontario Energy Board approved the IESO’s request to charge, on an interim basis, a Smart Metering Charge of $0.43 per meter per month effective April 1, 2022. The IESO has applied for approval to maintain this charge at $0.43 per meter per month for the next five years, beginning January 1, 2023.
The Smart Metering Charge covers the costs of operating the Meter Data Management/Repository (MDM/R), which collects, manages and stores smart metering data used to support Ontario’s 57 local distribution companies billing processes. This significantly reduced rate is a reflection of the maturity of the Smart Metering Entity (SME) operation and the ongoing efficiencies achieved by the SME over time in operating the provincial MDM/R.
