Transmission Line Upgrades Will Ensure Reliable Electricity Supply in the Greater Toronto Area and Areas as Far East as Ottawa

January 7, 2021

Upgrades to existing transmission lines serving the GTA and the east will address an emerging capacity need in the region, as the Pickering nuclear plant retires mid-decade and the Darlington nuclear plants undergo refurbishment.

Following a detailed assessment of feasibility and cost, the IESO has recommended to Hydro One that it proceed with conductor upgrades on the 230 kilovolt transmission lines running between Richview and Trafalgar transmission stations. These lines are part of the transmission interface that delivers electricity from western Ontario to the eastern part of the province.

At an estimated cost of about $50 million, this conductor upgrade project will increase the transfer capability of the transmission interface by approximately 2,000 megawatts. The work is tentatively scheduled to be carried out in phases between 2023 and 2025. More information is available on the IESO website.
