Managing new grid on Federal Energy Regulatory Commission reliability agenda

August 2, 2018

As part of the IESO’s efforts to help inform decision-making when it comes to planning and operating the North American grid, President and CEO Peter Gregg participated in a panel at the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s 2018 Reliability Technical Conference on July 31.

Among other topics, the six-person panel addressed trends in essential reliability services, changes to the generating resource mix, evolving demands in light of the growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), and the need for policies to support the shift to a decentralized grid.

“It’s no secret that keeping the lights on isn’t getting any easier, especially with changing supply and demand patterns, more extreme weather and cybersecurity threats,” wrote Peter, in a LinkedIn article that addressed the role of new technologies, storage, DERs and the IESO’s Market Renewal project in ensuring reliability needs at the lowest cost.
