Change to effective date for revised NERC Bulk Electric System Definition

June 20, 2013

The effective date for the North American Electric Reliability Corporation's (NERC) revised definition of the Bulk Electric System has been extended by one year at NERC's request.

The original effective date of July 1, 2013 has been extended to July 1, 2014, following an order last week by the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) in response to a petition by NERC. The associated 24-month implementation plan will begin once the definition becomes effective in July 2014. These timelines are also applicable in Ontario.

Until the revised definition becomes effective the current definition will continue to apply. Further information, including the presentation from the recent IESO Training workshop on the Bulk Electric System definition, is available on the Bulk Electric System Exception Procedure (SE-100) web page. It is expected that further training will be offered in 2014 to incorporate any future changes by NERC to the definition.
