Niagara Bulk Planning

Forecasting and Planning

The Niagara Region and surrounding areas are experiencing strong and ongoing economic activity. As electricity demand continues to grow across the area, there is a need to assess whether the high-voltage bulk transmission system can maintain reliability.

To ensure that the electricity system can support regional growth while maintaining operability standards, the IESO has initiated the Niagara Bulk Plan to identify transmission reinforcements required over the medium to long term. This bulk plan primarily encompasses Niagara Region, including the lower-tier municipalities, but includes the area up to the City of Hamilton, City of Burlington, Haldimand County and County of Brant.

Indigenous communities that may be potentially impacted or may have an interest based on treaty territory, traditional territory or traditional land uses include Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames, Six Nations of the Grand River as represented by Six Nations Elected Council as well as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council and Métis Nation of Ontario.

With the formalization of the Bulk System Planning Process in 2022, the IESO continues to enhance transparency and creates opportunities for meaningful input from Indigenous communities, municipalities and sector participants through active engagement. Participation during each phase of the bulk planning process facilitates community and stakeholder perspectives in planning outcomes, supporting the continued operation of a robust and adaptable electricity system.
