Market Renewal - Capacity Exports
Ontario’s market participants import and export energy on an hour-by-hour basis directly across interties with two provinces and three states. Ontario benefits because this supports reliability and overall market efficiency. However, the protocols and procedures are not currently in place to facilitate capacity-based transactions.
The export of excess capacity resources would:
- provide generators with additional opportunities to monetize their capacity while continuing to compete in the IESO administered energy market.
- offer an alternative to facilities that would otherwise choose to idle or shut down due to Ontario market conditions.
- improve the efficient use of assets on a regional basis.
Get Involved
This initiative will examine how stakeholders can offer their capacity in external markets. Interested parties are invited to participate in, and provide feedback on, this or any of the Market Renewal initiatives.

The IESO, along with stakeholders, is investigating the potential for allowing Ontario generators with capacity not required for Ontario’s reliability requirements to earn revenue by exporting the capacity to other jurisdictions. Because of the nature of this work, this initiative is now operating as part of the Market Renewal program.
