Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) complies with the privacy protection and access to information rules contained in Ontario's Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

The IESO is a not-for-profit corporation without share capital established under Part II of the Electricity Act, 1998. Consistent with its objects set out in section 6(1) of the Electricity Act, 1998, the IESO collects, uses, maintains, discloses and disposes of information for the purposes of operating our programs and business functions carried out to fulfil our statutory mandate, which includes the operation of the IESO-administered markets, engaging in activities that promote electricity conservation and the efficient use of electricity, and engaging in activities in support of the goal of ensuring adequate, reliable and secure electricity supply and resources in Ontario.

FIPPA provides a right of access to information under the control of the IESO based on principles set out in section 1(a) of FIPPA. In addition, the IESO is obligated to protect the privacy of individuals with respect to personal information about themselves held by the IESO and to provide individuals with a right of access to that information.
