Updates to Uncompetitive Intertie Zone Designations
January 16, 2026
The IESO evaluates intertie zones on a quarterly basis to ensure fair and transparent market competition. Some factors that may result in a zone being declared uncompetitive include lack of a market for imports or exports with open access to transmission, high transmission access fees, or regulatory barriers restricting trade. Uncompetitive Intertie Zones are used to apply after-the-fact settlement charges to market participants that unfairly benefit from intertie market conditions.
