Demand-Side Technical Papers Offer In-Depth Look into Planning Considerations for a Future System

July 10, 2025

The IESO has released a series of technical paper discussions that leverage insights into different aspects of the future electricity system in Ontario – helping the IESO and sector better understand the trends, risks and considerations when planning for a growing system.

This series comprises three papers that each explores demand forecasting uncertainties and their implications on system planning as they relate to: 1) electricity energy and peak demands from electric vehicle adoption and charging; 2) large step loads; and 3) space heating electrification.

Looking ahead, the uncertainties with new load development, as identified in these papers, will inform an Ontario demand growth margin, a new forecasting measure to provide a stable growth signal for the province to manage the uncertainty over the next few years, while also providing clarity for electricity planning purposes.

Situated at the heart of Ontario’s electricity system, the IESO’s unique role and data collection allow us to demonstrate a broader view of the complex challenges of our energy transition.

The IESO’s technical papers reflect the changing environment in which we work and plan for, and they complement our Annual Planning Outlook by providing context for our forecasts and procurements in the APO.
