Engaging Indigenous Communities and Municipalities

April 25, 2024

Indigenous communities and municipalities play an essential role in leading Ontario’s energy future. The IESO was out in force this past week to answer questions and share information at the following events:

  • First Nations Major Projects Coalition, which included the launch of the National Indigenous Electrification Strategy to position Indigenous communities as leaders in decarbonizing and doubling Canada’s electricity generation, transmission and distribution systems.
  • Good Roads where the IESO hosted a session outlining Ontario’s evolving energy landscape, upcoming procurements and the role of municipalities in ensuring Ontario’s electricity system is ready to support population growth, economic development and decarbonization.
  • Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association to discuss current transmission plans and studies that are underway, including the Northern Ontario Connection Study to connect off-grid remote First Nations and the Northern Ontario System Bulk Study to facilitate additional power flows between northern and southern Ontario.
