Regional Electricity Planning - Niagara

Forecasting and Planning

Regional electricity planning for the Niagara Region was completed in December 2022 with the release of an electricity plan – Integrated Regional Resource Plan (IRRP). A Regional Infrastructure Plan (RIP) led by Hydro One will be initiated next, as part of the regional planning process. This engagement initiative provided communities and stakeholders with an opportunity to offer input for consideration into the development of the IRRP.

Regional electricity plans take up to a 20-year outlook on every region in the province. The planning process provides an opportunity for communities to tell the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities, and to contribute to the development of the options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs.

Interested parties that were invited to participate in this engagement initiative and may include but are not limited to:

  • Local municipalities encompassed in the region: City of Port Colborne, City of Welland, City of Thorold, City of Niagara Falls, Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, City of St. Catharines, Town of Fort Erie, Town of Lincoln, Township of West Lincoln, Town of Grimsby, Township of Wainfleet, and Town of Pelham
  • Indigenous communities including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames and Six Nations of the Grand River (Six Nations Elected Council and HCCC) and MNO Niagara Region Métis Council.
  • Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community and already participate as part of the Technical Working Group, including Alectra Utilities, Canadian Niagara Power Inc., Grimsby Power Inc., Hydro One Networks Inc., Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc., Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro Inc., and Welland Hydro-Electric System Corporation
  • Transmitters (Hydro One Networks Inc.)
  • Consumers, service providers, and associations for the area

Niagara Technical Working Group - A Technical Working Group led by the IESO and consisting of representatives from the seven LDCs in the region and the transmitter, will use this regional planning engagement initiative to consider input that will identify and plan for local electricity needs over the next 20 years.

Additional details on the IESO’s plans to engage communities and interested parties throughout the process are outlined in the engagement plan.

All comments and enquiries in this engagement initiative can be directed to engagement@ieso.ca.
