Regional Electricity Planning - Niagara

Regional electricity planning is underway for the Niagara electrical region to ensure a reliable supply of electricity, and to support local growth and economic development. Regional planning looks at the unique needs of each region and considers wire and non-wire options and innovative resources to meet the needs. This engagement initiative will provide interested parties with an opportunity to offer input for consideration during the regional planning process.

Regional electricity plans take a 20-year outlook on every region in the province. The planning process provides an opportunity for communities to inform the IESO about anticipated needs and priorities, and to contribute to the development of the options for meeting this region’s future electricity needs.

Interested parties in this engagement initiative include but are not limited to:

• Local municipalities encompassed in the region: City of Port Colborne, City of Welland, City of Thorold, City of Niagara Falls, Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, City of St. Catharines, Town of Fort Erie, Town of Lincoln, Township of West Lincoln, Town of Grimsby, Township of Wainfleet, Town of Pelham, and Haldimand County.
• Indigenous communities including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames,Six Nations of the Grand River as represented by Six Nations Elected Council as well as the Haudenosaunee Confederacy Chiefs Council, Métis Nation of Ontario and Niagara Region Métis Council.
• Local distribution companies (LDCs) who serve the community including Alectra Utilities, Canadian Niagara Power Inc., Grimsby Power Inc., Hydro One Networks Inc., Niagara Peninsula Energy Inc., Niagara-on-the-Lake Hydro Inc., and Welland Hydro-Electric System Corporation
• Transmitters (Hydro One Networks Inc.)
• Consumers, service providers, local residents, businesses and associations in the area

Niagara Technical Working Group - A Technical Working Group led by the IESO and consisting of representatives from the seven LDCs in the region and the transmitter, will use this regional planning engagement initiative to consider input that will identify and plan for local electricity needs over the next 20 years.
