Technical Feasibility Study

Connection applicants may request an optional technical feasibility study for their potential new or modified connection to the IESO-controlled grid. This study is used to determine whether an applicant’s project will introduce reliability or operability issues and to determine if the potential new or modified connection has the technical characteristics needed to address an operability or reliability issue.

Step 1 - Submit technical feasibility study application

To begin the process, the connection applicant must submit a technical feasibility study application package to the IESO at connection.assessments@ieso.ca using the applicable form:

Step 2 – Submit deposit

The connection applicant must submit the appropriate deposit as outlined in Market Manual 1.4.

Step 3 - Execute technical feasibility study agreement

The IESO and the connection applicant will negotiate a scope of work and execute a technical feasibility study agreement. The completion date for a technical feasibility study is negotiated between the IESO and the connection applicant as part of the scope of work.

Step 4 – Issue confidential technical feasibility study report

The IESO completes the studies as per the agreed scope of work and produces a draft technical feasibility study report that is issued to the connection applicant.

After receiving feedback on the draft technical feasibility report from the connection applicant, the IESO issues the final feasibility study report to the connection applicant. The technical feasibility study report is confidential and will not be posted to the Application Status table.

Next step – Connection assessment

After completing a technical feasibility study, the connection applicant must complete a connection assessment once the project advances to a final detailed design that is likely to be constructed. See Obtaining A Connection Assessment.
