Indigenous communities are critical partners in Ontario’s energy sector and bring unique perspectives, knowledge and leadership to energy projects and energy planning.

On October 25-26, 2017, the Ministry of Energy and the IESO are hosting a two-day conference that will bring together Ontario First Nation communities, First Nation youth representatives, industry stakeholders and leading community energy experts, to facilitate discussions, share learnings, build collaboration and promote community energy planning across the province.

What to expect from the Symposium

Community energy planning is an increasingly important part of building strong, resilient communities. The Ministry of Energy and the IESO have invested almost $9 million in more than 90 First Nations in Ontario to support community energy planning through the Aboriginal Community Energy Plan (ACEP) program. Some communities have completed their community energy plans, others are at various points along the journey, and still others have yet to start the process, making this an ideal moment for a wide-ranging and inclusive discussion about community energy planning.

The agenda for the Symposium will be posted as soon as it's finalized. In the meantime, here's what you can expect:

  • Focused discussions on ways to enhance the energy support programs currently offered by the IESO, to better align programs with community needs and interests
  • An opportunity to provide direct input into the IESO’s review of conservation programming for Indigenous communities, which is intended to better understand needs and remove barriers
  • A forum to participate in the evolution of the IESO’s conservation and community energy funding programs to ensure they meet the needs of Indigenous communities.

Interested in attending? Please register for the symposium no later than Friday, October 6, 2017 at 11:59 PM EST.

Continuing the Discussion

In conjunction with the Indigenous Community Energy Symposium, the IESO will be hosting a series of Regional Electricity Forums across Ontario between October and December. These forums will focus on the broader role of regional and community involvement in energy planning and will also include sessions to discuss conservation opportunities and funding programs for First Nations and Métis, including the Aboriginal Community Energy Plan (ACEP) program.
