Changes to hourly demand response participation framework, effective May 1

April 18, 2019

The IESO, along with the Demand Response Working Group, has been working to improve the use of hourly demand response (HDR) resources, including increasing the flexibility of the HDR to provide capacity when the system needs it.

For the next commitment period, starting May 1, 2019:

  • Current standby parameters will be modified to put HDR resources on standby if they are scheduled for at least one hour of the availability window.

  • A new standby notification will be issued when the applicable pre-dispatch shadow price for an HDR resource is equal to or greater than $200/MWh in at least one hour of the availability window, prior to 7 a.m. of the dispatch day.

  • Current activation parameters will be changed to enable HDR resources to be activated if they are scheduled for DR in at least one and up to four consecutive hours during the availability window.

A more detailed summary of these and the other changes to the HDR Test Activation Protocol and HDR activation timeline is online.
