Single Schedule Market

The Single Schedule Market High-Level Design engagement was initiated to develop a design to address the current misalignment between price and dispatch, with a move to locational pricing, which reflects the true cost of producing and consuming electricity at a given location.

The Day-Ahead Market High-Level Design engagement  was initiated to develop a design to allow participants to submit day-ahead bids and offers to compete with others for a day-ahead price, supporting more open competition among market participants and providing greater financial and operational certainty.

The Enhanced Real-Time Unit Commitment High-Level Design engagement was initiated to develop a design to help ensure when changes in system needs arise in the pre-dispatch timeframe, the most cost-effective set of resources will be available to meet demand in real-time.

Market Renewal Working Group

The Market Renewal Working Group (MRWG) was formed as a representative stakeholder forum to guide and advise the IESO on strategic, policy and design decisions set out in the market renewal program (MRP).

The Non-Emitting Resources Subcommittee was established by the MRWG to help better understand the impacts of MRP on this resource group.

Market Renewal - Capacity Exports

 

Through this engagement, the IESO investigated the potential to allow Ontario generators to export their capacity to other jurisdictions. Stakeholders were invited to provide input into the process to establish the rules and protocols that would enable opportunities for market participants with generating capacity not required for Ontario’s reliability requirements to earn revenue by exporting this capacity.

Market Renewal - Enabling System Flexibility

The IESO identified an emerging need for the ability to schedule resources capable of responding within a short time frame in order to manage forecast uncertainty in the real-time energy market. The IESO engaged stakeholders to explore a range of potential solutions for enhanced flexibility in the electricity system.

Market Renewal Engagement

Beginning in 2016, the IESO held a series of consultations with stakeholders on the rationale, scope and set of initiatives which should be included under the program and developed the Market Renewal Engagement framework. During this time, the IESO also worked with stakeholders and its consultant on the development of a benefits case for market renewal (completed in April, 2017).

Since that time, stakeholder consultations on Market Renewal have evolved and take place within engagements focused on specific initiatives.
