Organizations must register if they intend to participate in the IESO-administered markets or programs, have a physical facility connecting to the IESO-controlled grid, or plan to have a physical facility that is a variable generator 5 MW or greater.
Organizations must also register if they intend to become a service provider such as a metering service provider.

To Register An Organization

To Register As A Market Participant
The IESO's Market Registration group will establish mandatory organization contacts and provide initial access to Online IESO. The user with the Applicant Representative role will receive various tasks at the appropriate time via Online IESO to complete the Authorize Market Participant task, including, but not restricted to:
Paying the Market Registration application fee $1,130 ($1,000 + 13% HST)
Providing an Ontario Energy Board (OEB) licence
Providing a National Energy Permit (for Energy Trader - Exporter only)
Providing prudential support for those who plan to participate in the real-time IESO-administered markets
Providing details of a Canadian bank account
Providing an Emergency Preparedness Plan that describes how the organization will respond to emergencies affecting the supply or delivery of electricity. See Emergency Preparedness guidelines for assistance to develop emergency preparedness plans.
- Establishing Participant contacts through Online IESO.

To Register As A Program Participant
The IESO manages programs relating to the energy market, operations and settlements.
All wind and solar generation facilities (variable generators) connecting to the IESO-controlled grid, or connecting to a distribution system with an installed capacity of 5 MW or greater, are required to register as both an Organization and as a Market Participant if connected to the IESO controlled grid; or a Program Participant if connected to the distribution system.
Market Registration will establish mandatory organization contacts and provide initial access to the Online IESO which will allow the applicant complete the remainder of the required tasks.
A variable generator connecting to the IESO-controlled grid must also complete the Manage Facilities & Equipment task.
All variable generators greater than 5 MW must participate in the centralized forecasting service, which requires that meteorological and operational data are sent to us as outlined in the training guide.
A variable generator connecting to the distribution system must complete registration tasks prior to reaching commercial operation.
The Participant Technical Reference Manual outlines all the communication methods and protocols available for a variable generator to send data/information to the IESO.
